Okay, so I don’t have much time to write a post on my second lesson as grad school work is pretty crazy rightnow so I’m going to keep this short.
First off, it was just as much, if not even more fun than last week. The first few exercises we did at the Barre I felt much more confident with, and didn’t feel so lost. We did some new stuff, including a move I can’t remember the name of but which involved keeping the knee still and moving from coupe to passe with the standing leg foot flat, followed by repeating it in releve. It was here when my teacher told me the main point I took from today’s lesson – KEEP MY HEAD UP! As he pointed out, our heads are pretty heavy things so if I keep my head down in front of my body I’m naturally shifting my centre of balance and making things much more difficult for myself.
After that it was time for centre work, this week with Ronde de Jambe’s, more complicated jumps (switching between 5th positions and 2nd and 4th – remembering for 4th to move both legs in the air, not just one!) and some arabesque work. This involved moving across the floor with arabesques and coupes, first walking and then skipping. I could get the walking but the skipping threw me – I don’t skip much (!) and I couldn’t quite get the rhythm with the music. Oh well, practice makes perfect I suppose!
Once again, I had so much fun – and got to know some of the other students a little better. There is a dancer from the company who is recovering from an injury who is in our class so it is nice to have such an exemplary student to watch if I’m unsure of anything!
So, on that note I’m going to go and do some more Math, but I wanted to finish by asking you all a question: What should I do between classes? At the moment I’m racing with the University Cycling Team at weekends and training with them a couple of nights during the week but I really want to try and do some things during the week to help my Ballet. Any suggestions? I’m guessing as a beginner I should take things slowly and not practice outside of class (so as not to develop bad habits) but are there any good stretching routines, cardio workouts etc you guys recommend specifically for Ballet? Also, would it be too much to look at taking another class each week? I would love to take 2 classes a week but don’t know if this would be too much for a beginner… Any suggestions welcome!
Until next time, keep dancing!
